Screen-Free Activities for Kids This Summer

Summer is here, it’s the perfect time for kids to disconnect from screens and soak up the sun!

Engaging in screen-free activities not only promotes physical activity and well-being but also encourages imagination, creativity, and social interaction.

Here’s a list of screen-free activities that will keep kids entertained all summer long.

Screen-Free Activities for Summer

Outdoor Adventures

Encourage your children to become little outdoor adventurers by exploring nature.

Take them on hikes, nature walks, or swimming to discover the beauty of local parks, woods, and lakes. Teach them about various plants, birds, insects, and animals they see along the way, this will help stimulate their curiosity and develop their observation skills.

Two standout destinations that shouldn’t be missed are Lindenwood Park and Broadway Square.

Lindenwood Park is the ultimate family-friendly spot and the biggest multi-use park in Fargo. You’ll find endless things to do here! Explore miles of trails that are perfect for walking and biking adventures, or rent bikes and kayaks to add some extra fun to your visit.

And Broadway Square, in the midst of downtown Fargo, is a gem among our city’s newest parks. This place is all about bringing the community together. In the summertime, it turns into a cozy turf area, perfect for lounging around and soaking up the sun. It really brings out the vibrant energy of the city!

Arts and Crafts

Get creative! Set up an outdoor art station with supplies like paints, brushes, papers, and clay.

You and your child can go on a treasure hunt for leaves, twigs, flowers, and more. Once you’ve gathered your materials, you can glue the assortment onto paper or cardboard and create a masterpiece! Getting crafty can enhance kids’ fine motor skills and boost self-expression.

Sports and Games

Some of my favorite summer memories as a kid revolve around playing games outdoors during the summer.

We would play yard games, like bags or bocce balls, and sometimes we would even have a volleyball or kickball tournament!

Summer is the perfect time to introduce kids to different sports and outdoor games. And these games can encourage friendly teamwork, discipline, healthy competition, and an active lifestyle.

Gardening

Next, get your little ones involved in your yard! Gift them a small portion of your outdoor space for their own garden. Allow them to plant and tend to flowers, herbs, or vegetables.

Gardening teaches patience and responsibility. Plus, let’s not forget the pure joy on their faces when they see a tiny seed grow into a big, beautiful plant!

Picnics

Share meals outdoors and encourage family bonding with picnics in the park or your backyard! Involve your children in the preparation process, from choosing the food to packing the picnic basket — encourage them to help with simple cooking tasks. Family picnics can create the best memories.

Storytelling and Reading

Another fun outdoor activity can be creating an outdoor reading nook where your child can cozy up with a good book. Last summer we created the perfect little reading spot on our deck.

Encourage your child to read independently or share stories with siblings or friends.

Science Experiments

Engage your little scientists in outdoor experiments that are both educational and entertaining. Build a homemade volcano or create a solar-powered oven. These hands-on activities help with critical thinking and problem-solving skills!

This summer, let’s encourage our children  to disconnect from screens and embrace the outdoors. There are countless screen-free activities to keep children engaged, active, and inspired.

Happy summer adventures!

Paiton Kartes
Hi there, I'm Paiton – a wife, mother, animal lover, and caffeine enthusiast (coffee is my weakness!). We are blessed with a handsome little man named Callahan. In addition to managing a busy household, we're also proud pet parents to three adorable animals. Our furry family includes a sweet ragdoll cat and two dogs – a big-hearted Pitbull and a bug-eyed Pug. And when we have the space and time, we enjoy fostering animals from Homeward Animal Shelter.
