Picnics in the park, hiking along the Red River, trips to the lake for swimming and boating —  the summer and early fall seasons seem full of endless possibilities for date nights.

However, when it comes to late fall and winter, it can sometimes be difficult to find fun things to do outside of the house for a winter date night in Fargo.

And if you’re anything like me, your instinct in the winter might be to spend every date night watching a movie on Netflix and ordering takeout. While that does sound pretty awesome, for those willing to bundle up and brave the cold, there are plenty of fun outdoor activities that can be just as enjoyable in the winter.

Here are some winter date night ideas in Fargo & Moorhead for when you’re in the mood to get a babysitter and enjoy a night out with your partner.

Outdoor Winter Date Night Ideas

Viking Ship Park

During the winter months, Viking Ship Park in Moorhead is an excellent place to get outdoors and appreciate the magic of winter. You can rent snowshoes or cross-country skis at the Hjemkomst nearby and explore the trails!

Viking Ship Park also hosts a few organized events throughout the winter as a part of the Frostival celebration in January and February. Visit the Moorhead Parks and Recreation website for more details.

Ice Skating

While Fargo-Moorhead is full of places to skate (both indoor and outdoor), the perfect spot for a winter date is the ice rink at Broadway Square in Fargo. Located in the middle of downtown, it’s a great spot for a skate either before or after a dinner date. There are even a few nights throughout the winter where movies are projected on a big screen to watch while you skate. For more information on hours and pricing, go to their website.

Snowshoeing and Skiing

If you outdoor activities, snowshoeing or cross-country skiing are the perfect way to enjoy the winter season. Edgewood Chalet in Fargo has options to rent cross-country skis and snowshoes, and has many manicured trails to explore. For hours and rental information, visit their website.

Find an Igloo or Outdoor Fire Pit to Enjoy!

If you want to be outdoors but stay a little warm, try an igloo or outdoor fire pit! We’ve rounded up some great spots to find both here.

Indoor Winter Date Night Ideas

Sometimes it’s just too cold to enjoy the weather outdoors. Luckily, there are plenty of places in Fargo-Moorhead for a cozy date night.

Breweries

Head to a local brewery to spend time enjoying a craft beer and the company of your spouse. And some local breweries, like Drekker Brewing, offer outdoor spaces as well, usually with fire pits to warm up providing both indoor and outdoor options.

Fargo Theatre

There’s something special about walking up to the iconic Fargo Theatre marquee in downtown Fargo. And when there’s snow flying it feels even more magical. Visit the Fargo Theatre website to check movie times and to order tickets in advance.

Coffee Shops

Sometimes it’s nice just to curl up somewhere cozy and enjoy a warm coffee or tea with your spouse.

Fargo-Moorhead is home to dozens of coffee shops. And a few shops in town, including Twenty Below (Moorhead), even have a fireplace, adding to the cozy winter vibe.

FM Curling Club

Try learning a new winter activity with your partner! The FM Curling Club offers several “Learn to Curl” events on evenings for a perfect, active night out. Also, although it’s an indoor event, be sure to dress warm because the ice arena is kept cold! Visit the FM Curling Club website for more information on dates and times.

Overall there are many options for date night, even in the dead of winter! I hope this list is a great starting point for enjoying winter in our unique corner of the world.
