Implantable Contact Lens: An Option for Vision Correction

Bridgett Brewer knew she wanted LASIK. So much so that she started saving for the procedure. And once she hit her savings goal, she scheduled her consultation.

But she hit an unexpected roadblock; the ophthalmologist she saw at the time told her she wasn’t a candidate for LASIK.

That was years ago, and she’d long since moved on, until recently when a chance meeting with Vance Thompson Vision’s Dr. Michael Greenwood gave her renewed hope for vision correction.

“During our conversation, he mentioned that there were options other than LASIK that I might be a candidate for,” recalls Bridgett. “The prospect intrigued me, and I thought maybe this isn’t the end of the road.”

LASIK is indeed the most well-known laser vision correction procedure. However, patients don’t always realize that many times when LASIK isn’t an option, the experts at Vance Thompson Vision can offer other possibilities to achieve their vision goals.

An Alternative to LASIK

In Bridgett’s case, Dr. Greenwood was able to recommend an implantable contact lens (ICL)

An implantable contact lens is similar to the concept of a permanent contact lens. An ophthalmologist corrected Brewer’s nearsightedness by implanting a collamer lens behind the eye’s iris (the colored tissue of the eye). Her natural lens remains in her eye, which allows her to focus at near, intermediate, and far distances, while also leaving some depth of focus.

Bridgett noted both the procedure and recovery process were simple and nearly painless.

“My process from start to finish was so smooth and easy. I almost felt guilty about it,” Bridgett said.

A History of Vision Issues

Before her implantable contact lens procedure, Bridgett’s vision needs noticeably impacted her daily life. As an active child, she was in and out of the optometrist’s office, and taping up her glasses in the meantime. She went through almost a dozen pairs of glasses before receiving her first pair of contacts at nine years old.

Managing her vision became more complicated when she developed allergies in her early 30s. Whether she was on the golf course, the softball field, or taking her dog for a walk, her eyes were itchy, sensitive, and dry. Her allergies, combined with worsening vision, even prevented her from fully taking in the beauty of the Grand Canyon on a vacation to Arizona.

Now, Bridgett has the freedom to view all sorts of national parks and participate in all her favorite activities.

“It’s the best my vision has ever been,” Bridgett said. “Our state softball tournament was two weeks later, and I was able to play in that. It was incredible.” implantable contact lens
