5 Benefits of Swim Lessons All Year Long

foss swim school fargoThe temps are falling, and many of us have put away those swimsuits for the season. You may not have swimming on the mind, but it’s actually a great time to start or continue swim lessons in Fargo! In some ways, the winter months are actually the perfect time to enroll in swim school.

Thanks to our partners at FOSS Swim School in Fargo, we’re highlighting some of the reasons why swimming lessons are important all year long. No matter the season, here’s why you should consider getting (back) in the pool!

foss swim school5 Reasons Why Swim Lessons Matter All Year Long

1. It maintains learning momentum.

Just like in the classroom, students learn best when learning can continue and keep progressing. As a rule, students who skip a quarter are more likely to need to re-learn some lessons. When students stay engaged with swim lessons, they retain and build upon more of what they learn. Skill progression can happen faster when there are less breaks in learning – if you can just keep taking steps forward, graduation comes sooner!

2. It builds strength and stamina.

Swimming is both a physical and a mental activity. Just as a student may forget some skills and need to be reminded, the muscles used for swimming might lose a little bit of strength if unused for a longer period of time. Even if a student may come back knowing exactly what to do, they might need a few weeks of extra homework to get back all of their strength and stamina – which isn’t an issue for continuous swimmers.

3. It keeps their swim safety skills sharp.

Water hazards don’t exist only in summer. Pools, lakes, rivers and more are accessible year round, and so water safety skills are important no matter the season. Staying in swimming means retaining swim skills better, which can help improve their chances of staying safe around water.

4. It’s a safe, social activity to do with kids their own age.

Swimmers spend time with the same group of students and same teachers week after week. We believe students learn best surrounded by peers of similar age and skill, but it also makes swim school more fun and social – which can be important during months they may be indoors more.

5. It’s a way to get the wiggles out!

Energy needs to go somewhere, especially in the colder months. Swim school gives you a guaranteed time each week when students will tire themselves out.

Wondering other specific benefits of swimming during each season? Each time of the year offers its own unique swimming advantages.

  • In Winter, pools offer a respite from the cold. Shake off the winter chill and evade cabin fever with a trip to FOSS, where the pool water is 91 degrees, and the indoor air is warm. Your kids will be grabbing their snow boots and beach towels and rushing for the door when they know warm water awaits, as well as the learning games and fun they get to experience in class.
  • Spring is a time of preparation for water activity, brushing up on safety lessons (this is the reason Water Safety Month is in May) and getting stronger at swimming.
  • Summer really is the season to love water. Swimming offers recreation, exercise, and a reason to get together with friends and family. Plus, there are so many water adjacent activities to enjoy, like boating, fishing, water skiing and more!
  • And Fall is a time of learning and growing, as kids return to school. It’s also the start of the competitive swim season at schools in many states.
