Summer is right around the corner, which means you are likely shopping for new swimsuits! When it comes to choosing the right swimwear for your kids, we want to share a little secret:

Swimsuit color matters when it comes to staying safe!

We talked to the experts at Foss Swim School to get the scoop on which colors are best for swimsuits and keeping kids safe in water. Bright colors are always best, and be sure to keep in mind that swimming in a lake versus a pool will make a difference in visibility (lakes are murkier and tend to be harder to see into).

Here’s what they recommend for choosing a swimsuit color this summer!

Best Swimsuit Color Choices for Safety

BEST CHOICE

The best color choices are going to be bright, neon colors. Think neon orange, hot pink, bright yellow, or neon green. These colors are particularly visible in darker lake water, and could mean the difference in spotting a child underwater.

BETTER CHOICE

Bright purples, reds, and neon blues can be visible in clear pool water or shallow lake water, but become more difficult to see in deeper, murkier water. You’re better off with the choices above if you want the most visible colors.

NOT RECOMMENDED

The darker or lighter the color of the swimsuit is, the less visible it becomes. Some are nearly invisible, even in shallow, clear water. Avoid colors like dark blue, dark green, black, white, or pastel colors like light blue, pink, or purple.

The moral of the story? Brighter is always better, and think “neon” bright, not “white” bright.

What About Swimsuit Patterns?

It may seem like patterns would make it easier to identify a child in water, but be careful with this notion. Large patterns in particular can reduce visiblity, since they tend to break up the shape of the swimmer’s body. Smaller patterns may not have as much effect, but solid colors are always going to be a better choice for safety.

Always Keep an Eye on Your Child

Remember, while choosing the best swimsuit color is helpful, it doesn’t replace the need to always keep an eye on your child in the water. Make sure your child knows basic swimming and water safety skills, and enroll your child in swimming lessons to ensure they will know what to do in different levels and types of water.
