Books that Make Great Gifts for Moms

Reading is a fundamental part of our lives.

As children, we felt a level of excitement when first learning how to read. Progressing to chapter books was thrilling, but maybe a tad stressful. And to add another layer of complexity, reading was even incentivized at times. For example, does anyone else remember the BOOK IT! program where the reward for reading included pizza?

As high school and college students, we either had to read our textbooks or risk falling behind in class. Then after consuming hundreds of pages, the last thing we wanted to do in our free time was more reading.

Even now as adults, the pressure to read sometimes rears its ugly head.

Starting a new job? Time to read the employee manual and list of never-ending policies. Having a baby? Better start reading those parenting blogs and books ASAP! Want to stay current in world events and politics? Read!

You catch my drift.

As a result, reading oftentimes falls into one of two, very different buckets: “have to” or “get to.”

The “have to” bucket has the daunting examples listed above. And it can feel like a chore.

The “get to” bucket, on the other hand, is a lot more enjoyable to pour into. It includes the books we choose to fill the elusive alone time. The pockets of time where you get to read. For fun, for relaxation, for beautiful mind-quieting bliss.

The Joy of a Great Book

In recent years, reading has become one of my favorite hobbies. To curl up on the sofa with an amazing book, cozy blanket, and delicious beverage is the epitome of relaxation.

And as an added bonus, reading has numerous health benefits. You mean I can reduce stress, combat the risk of depression, and improve brain connectivity by simply enjoying a great book? Sign me up.

This time of year provides the perfect opportunity to give the gift of reading to someone you care about. Maybe someone in your circle is an avid reader and would love to add another paperback to her collection. Or, one of your family members is just getting into reading and you want to nudge her along. Perhaps you want to tuck a special book in with that gift to your best friend, child’s teacher, or favorite co-worker.

Books truly make wonderful gifts.

With the holidays quickly approaching, here is a short list of some of my personal favorites.

Great Books to Gift to Moms

1. Where the Crawdads Sing by Delia Owens

This one has been popular for awhile, but for good reason. It combines mystery, an endearing coming-of-age journey, and beautiful depictions of nature. Plus the ending will leave you breathless. Definitely a book you could read more than once.

2. The Magic of Motherhood by Ashlee Gadd

Don’t worry. This isn’t a parenting advice in a, “Get your kids on a solid routine” type of read. Rather, it’s a beautifully written collection of stories, anecdotes, and vulnerable words about motherhood. Ideal for any of your mom or mom-to-be friends. Another bonus? Its pretty cover will prompt you to leave it sitting out on your coffee table.

3. We Were the Lucky Ones by Georgia Hunter

This one was loved by every member of my book club. It follows the unspeakable journey of a group of siblings during WWII. Vivid descriptions of the unique challenges they endure will cause you to experience every emotion possible. Make sure you have Kleenex handy.

4. Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn

The layers of raw and real relationship dynamics, paired with some wild twists and turns, will certainly keep your attention. Actually, if you like a good spooky thriller, any of Gillian Flynn’s books are a good choice. This one is particularly creepy (in a fun-to-read kind of way). And if you love it, you can check out the mini-series starring Amy Adams when you’re finished.

5. Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

Set in the 1970s, this book follows the very different lives of two best friends. Their unique journey through life, careers, and love will have you turning pages quickly.

6. Present Over Perfect by Shauna Niequist

Even though this one may be categorized as personal development, I can assure you it’s still a “get to” bucket read. The focus of the book is centered on slowing down and enjoying life to the fullest. Shauna’s powerful writing will help you examine your own way of thinking. Just don’t be surprised if reading it leads you on a journey of self-discovery, filled with positive changes.

7. The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood

That’s right. It’s not just an amazingly addictive series on Hulu. Yes, the book is crazy good. And yes, even if you’re current with all the episodes, it’s still worth it to go back and read this one.

8. Any book you want!

Sorry, I may have cheated a little on this one. But in all honesty, there are endless good books out there. Go ahead and pick one for its gorgeous cover, glowing reviews, or because you’ve read it countless times. Either way the recipient will appreciate receiving such a special gift.

Make it even more meaningful by inscribing a personal note on the inside cover and you’re set.

After many years working in the long term care field, Jenna traded her Housing Director role to become a stay-at-home mom. Nowadays you can find her alongside her husband Elliot, raising their three little girls (Beatrice, Hazel, and Charlie) in West Fargo. In her free time, Jenna enjoys playing volleyball, reading a great book, or trying a new recipe in the kitchen. Her perfect day would start with an amazing cup (or two) of coffee and be filled with as much laughter and delicious food as possible.
