With summer right around the corner, it’s valuable to know what opportunities our kids have to check out books and participate in summer reading programs in Fargo, West Fargo, and Moorhead.

As a school library media specialist, I can tell you how important it is for our kids to read or be read to, consistently (shoot for 20 minutes per day). With nice weather and possibly more flexible schedules; there will be some fun things to help create some excitement around summer reading.

Things to Consider

Read inside or outside. Re-read the same books, or tackle a series. Listen to audio-books. Graphic novels, chapter or picture books…every choice is a good choice as long as the child is enjoying what they are reading or listening to. Watching animated stories can be great for our younger readers (they can follow along with and learn new words), but make sure your kid(s) are reading (and handling) print books as well. This is especially true for toddlers.

Below are links to all of the local public libraries’ programs, and other ideas to keep your kids reading throughout the summer months (plus win prizes!). *Some public school libraries are also offering limited checkout hours, which they will communicate to their school’s families.
