You’ve probably seen them around town — little libraries in neighborhoods throughout Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo, and our surrounding communities.

These small structures are part of a global movement called the Little Free Library. It’s a non-profit organization founded in 2012 and based in St. Paul, Minnesota. The goal of the organization is to build community, expand book access, and inspire people to read. Currently, there are over 150,000 Little Free Library book boxes around the world.

This program is led by volunteers and it’s a way for those involved to share books and meet neighbors.

Find a Little Library Near You

Scout out local book boxes using the map on their website or the Little Library app.

Then, make one your destination while on a walk, bike ride, or swing by a Little Free Library on the way to the park!

Why We Love Little Free Libraries

  1. They build community – what a great way to get to know your neighbors by sharing books!
  2. They encourage a love of reading – all ages can donate books to a Little Free Library (and of course anyone can take a book, too!).
  3. They are for all ages – any level of reading can be donated to the libraries, from adult non-fiction to board books for babies.
  4. It’s FREE! It can get expensive buying new books all the time to entertain our kids and ourselves, and this community book swap helps alleviate those costs while still providing a variety of titles to read.
