As the weather begins to turn warmer, many of us find ourselves ready to reduce clutter and reorganize our living spaces. And if you have kids, you know how challenging it can be to maintain closets, kids’ rooms, and playrooms.
Fear not! Here are some practical organization tips to help you reduce clutter and maintain a fresh home.
Ways to Reduce Clutter
Closet Clarity
Start your organizational journey with a key part of your home — the closet.
- Declutter first: Begin by going through your clothes and accessories. Donate or sell items you no longer wear or need. And consider packing away seasonal clothing to maximize space. When it comes to your linen closet, be sure to get rid of any miscellaneous things you don’t need.
- Find smart storage solutions: Invest in space-saving hangers, collapsible organizers, and shoe racks. Utilize vertical space by adding shelves or hanging organizers to store accessories and folded items.
- Categorize and color code: Arrange your clothes by category and color. This makes it easier to locate items quickly.
Kids Bedroom
Children’s rooms can easily become chaotic, but with a bit of planning, you can turn the chaos into order and reduce clutter.
- Involve the kids: Encourage your kiddos to participate in the decluttering process. Make it a fun activity by turning on some music or creating a reward system for completing tasks.
- Functional furniture: Choose multi-use furniture with built-in storage. Beds with drawers underneath or bookshelves with storage bins provide extra space for toys and clothes.
- Clear outgrown items: Regularly go through your child’s clothing and toys. I’m guilty of completely avoiding this most of the time! However when you donate or pass on items they have outgrown, you’re able to make room for new ones.
Playroom
The playroom often serves as the center of creativity and fun. Keep it organized with these tips:
- Zone the space: Establish specific areas for activities in the room, such as a reading nook, a crafting corner, and a designated space for storing toys. This helps keep things neat and makes it easier for kiddos to find their items. In cases where having a designated playroom might not be possible, make the most of your furniture by repurposing items for storage. For example, one option is to transform an ottoman into a functional space for keeping toys.
- Rotate toys: To prevent overwhelm, switch toys in and out periodically.
- Use labeled bins and baskets: Invest in storage containers and label them. This makes clean up time a breeze and encourages kids to take responsibility for their toys.
Consistently Reduce Clutter
As you become more organized, remember that consistency is key. Regularly reassess your organization systems and make adjustments as needed. Set a reminder in your phone to do this monthly, quarterly, or annually to ensure it gets added to your to-do list!
With a little effort and a commitment to maintaining order, you can create and maintain a clutter-free living space for you and your family.
