As Moms, we are always looking for ways to protect our children and plan for their future. While most of us understand the value of savings accounts, education plans, or even health insurance, we often overlook the importance of life insurance. It may seem like an uncomfortable topic, but it is actually one of the most valuable contributions to your family’s future.

Here’s why life insurance is something worth considering.

What is Life Insurance?

In simple terms, life insurance is a policy that provides a financial benefit to its beneficiaries (usually family members) in the event of the insured person’s death. It’s commonly used as a way to protect loved ones from the financial burdens that can arise after a loss.

There are many misconceptions around life insurance and who should consider it. The truth is, life insurance is a smart purchase for anyone at any age.

Life Insurance: 5 Things to Know

  1. There is a plan for any budget and situation.

No matter your age or budget, there is a plan that can be tailored to you. Purchasing any amount of life insurance is better than nothing at all.

2. Life insurance is not an “extra” purchase.

Much like health insurance and a retirement account, life insurance should be a necessary expense made to support your family when needed.

3. You don’t need to be old to purchase a policy.

Many people think life insurance should only be considered once you have reached an older age. But, life insurance can be purchased at any age – there are even policies for children!

4. It is possible to see a return from your life insurance investment, even while you are living.

There is an optional Return of Premium Rider for a 20- or 30-year term life insurance policy. If this policy is still in force at the end of the term, your premiums are returned to you TAX-FREE! This return can be used towards anything you want – paying for a child’s wedding or college, buying a vacation home, or paying off a mortgage.

5. Even children can benefit from Life Insurance.

As mentioned in #3 above, life insurance is not intended just for people of older ages. There are policies available for children, as well. Buying a policy while you child is young has many benefits, including:
  • Plan for the Future: Life insurance for children, particularly whole life policies, provides a living benefit through the accumulation of cash value. Over time, this cash value can be accessed via loans and withdrawals, which can be used for things like education, buying a home, or starting a business.
  • Guaranteed Coverage: Unfortunately, health is unpredictable. If your child were to develop a serious medical condition later in life, getting a policy may be more difficult or expensive. By purchasing a policy when a child is young, you can guarantee they have coverage regardless of health conditions.
  • Locking in Lower Rates: The cost of insurance is based on health and age. Purchasing a policy for a child guarantees the lower premiums for life. Buying insurance while they are young keeps the long-term contributions more affordable.

Is It Worth It?

Life insurance is not just a thoughtful, long-term financial decision, it’s a necessity in the unpredictability of today’s world. It not only provides the peace of mind for parents, but also sets children up for a more secure future. Think of it as a small contribution today that can make a big difference in years to come.

As parents we are always thinking about the future. Life insurance is one more tool to provide security and support–no matter how unpredictable life can be.
