History of Photography with Kary Janousek

Join us for a lecture on the history of photography from local artist Kary Janousek!

Step back into the 19th century and discover how photography began. Wet plate collodion artist Kary Janousek traces the remarkable history of photography, from its earliest experiments to the invention of the tintype and beyond. Drawing on years of experience creating photographs using authentic 19th-century techniques, she shares the science, artistry, and fascinating stories behind one of history’s most influential inventions. Historical cameras, photographs, books, and photographic equipment will be on display as part of the presentation.

Kary Janousek is a Minnesota-based wet plate collodion photographer who began working with the historic process in 2019. Since then, she has held 12 solo exhibitions, self-published two photography books, and completed her 2024 Silver Lining tour across historic sites in North Dakota and Deadwood, South Dakota. Working primarily in natural light, Janousek regularly lectures, demonstrates, and teaches workshops. Her historically-inspired images are archived in eight Midwestern museums, reflecting her commitment to preserving and sharing one of photography’s earliest artistic traditions.
