Planning a hiking adventure with little kids? Here are five tips to help create a fun experience for the whole family.

Tips for Hiking with Little Kids

1. Stop by the Visitors Center

No matter where you plan on going, stop by the visitors center to grab a map and chat with a park ranger or guide person. They will be able to answer any questions you might have before you head out on your hike. Be sure to use the bathroom and gather any additional purchases you might need before you leave.

2. Fill a Hiking Backpack with Supplies

Most of our hiking adventures result in the need for additional supplies. Pack a backpack with sunscreen, a first aid kit, and extra clothes. I have always found it helpful to have additional items that we might need in case of an emergency. And bringing a backpack with extra storage also allows for your kids to wear additional layers, such as a light jacket, that they might want to remove as they hike.

3. Choose a Paved (or Mostly Paved) Path

I have found that when exploring with littles, it’s nice to have a paved or at least mostly paved path to explore. For the most part, these paths will be easier to navigate and will allow for your littles to (hopefully!) make the whole trek on their own.

4. Pack Snacks and Lots of Water

As moms, we know how important it is to keep everyone fueled up and hydrated. Always pack a backpack with enough snacks and water for everyone. Plan to stop for a mini picnic to recharge along the way!

5. Plan for Stops to Explore

When my family goes hiking, we have no time limit. We typically plan for one or two hikes a day. Then we let the kids explore as much as they want along the way. With no timeline in place, it allows for everyone to feel a sense of peace and calm on the hike.

Some of our best memories from hiking include watching our kids find bugs in the grass or walking off the path to collect sticks or rocks. Just be sure to follow the park’s guidelines for collecting items when hiking.

Hiking with littles is not for the faint of heart, but a little preparation can make the experience more enjoyable. I hope these tips are helpful for your next hiking adventure!
